DOES A DOULA TAKE AWAY FROM MY PARTNER'S EXPERIENCE?
A doula does not take place of your significant other, family members or any other part of your support team. Instead, a doula is proven to give a sense of ease to all members of your support team. Sometimes a partner will not know how to support you in the depths of labour, as much as they want to. A doula will give your partner different ways to help you, from different comfort measures and encourage intimacy and bonding throughout the experience. A doula will also help you to build your relationship with your primary care provider through preparing questions and education for your appointments together.
I ALREADY HAVE A MIDWIFE/OBGYN, WILL I STILL BENEFIT FROM A DOULA?
Unlike a primary care provider, a doula only has a limited number of clients at one time, but only YOU during your birth. For this reason, 100% of my focus will be on you and helping you through the process entire as comfortably as possible. A primary care providers top concern is your medical well-being, a doula is free from these responsibilities allowing them to support you in ways your care provider may not be able to in the depths of labor.
Are doulas like a midwife? Do you deliver babies?
Can my Partner be my doula?
No. Both midwives and OBGYNs are medically trained to deliver babies and are responsible for a healthy birthing person and a safe delivery. Doulas are completely non-clinical and do not deliver babies, and are concerned with the emotional health of the birthing person and attending to other non-medical physical needs.
Your partner can be a lot of things, but they are not your doula. We all have distinct roles and each has their purpose. Your partner knows you in an intimate way that your doula does not. They are emotionally connected to you, while your doula is attuned to your current needs and the needs of your partner. Your doula knows about birth in a more nuanced way than a partner or family member and draws upon training, wealth of knowledge, and intuition to support you through labor. Doulas enable partners to be what they need to be for you without having to be something else as well.
